Victory at the Ullapool Regatta!

Wormit rowers took part in the 2026 Ullapool Regatta which took place on Loch Broom by Ullapool on the 11th and 12th July and involved seventeen rowing clubs in total.

The Ullapool course is 2km in length with the boats launching in line from the outer harbour wall, racing west across the head of the loch for 1 km then rounding a buoy and returning back to the starting line.

The rowing boats had to avoid the Ullapool to Stornoway Ferry, which passes across the course twice a day, and during this regatta the cruise ship that docked in the loch on the Sunday. The weather was cool and blowy on the first day and then sunny but still rather windy on day two, making the crossing of the loch a bit choppy and the return leg a bit tiring into the wind. Nonetheless the spectacular scenery of Loch Broom and the surrounding mountains
always makes this regatta a fabulous event.

After two days racing with men’s, women’s and mixed teams of different ages, Wormit emerged victorious, beating the second-placed team, Eastern Amateur Coastal Rowing Club, by a single point.

As is the case with all the coastal rowing regattas, the social side of the event is as enjoyable as the racing, which for Ullapool means the Saturday night ceilidh in the ferry terminal building. A hundred or more sweaty rowers doing the Orkney strip-the-willow across the tightly packed dance floor. What could be better.
